March Series of the Month: The Queens of Society

"Lord Dorchester, however, did not leave his daughter alone, and when a more complaisant suitor with a handsomer income offered himself, briefly commanded her to marry him. To disobey such an order was then the height of undutiful conduct; yet so great was the disgust which Lady Mary entertained for the gentleman proposed that she ventured to write to her father, offering not to marry at all rather than to unite with him. The furious parent sent for his daughter, and told her that she must marry him at once, or consent to pass the rest of her days, while he lived, in retirement in a remote part of the country."
-- From Lady Mary Wortley Montagu

First published in 1861, The Queens of Society by Katherine Byerley Thomson is a replica of the beautifully illustrated 1890 second edition. March Book of the Month: When South Africa Called, We Answered

As South Africa just celebrated the 20th anniversary of the fall of apartheid, author and award-winning journalist, Danny Schechter is back with a new book, and Cosimo is proud to announce the new release of When South Africa Called, We Answered: How the Media and International Solidarity Helped Topple Apartheid as our March Book of the Month.

In this book, Schechter describes the crucial role media played in anti-apartheid achieving worldwide recognition, which enabled outsiders to support the anti-apartheid movement. In Schechter's view, it were ultimately the joint efforts by leaders like the late Nelson Mandela, freedom fighters, activists and media that led to the downfall of apartheid in South Africa.

When South Africa Called, We Answered is an inspiring and educational read for those interested in the role of the media in historic world events, the history of South Africa, journalism, and activism that mobilizes people for the greater good.

When South Africa Called, We Answered is available in paperback and eBook at leading online bookstores, including Amazon (Paperback, Kindle) and Barnes & Noble.

March Classic of the Month: Life of St. Patrick and His Place in History

Today is Saint Patrick’s Day, a day that has become associated with leprechauns, beer, and corned beef. However, this day is really a celebration of Saint Patrick who was responsible for bringing Christianity to Ireland. His technique of using the Shamrock to describe the Holy Trinity is well-known and one of the reasons he was chosen as the Patron Saint of Ireland. We are honored to present Life of St. Patrick and His Place in History by J.B. Bury as our Classic of the Month for March.

This renowned biography of the great Catholic saint, famous for converting Ireland to Christianity, is also a stunningly vivid portrait of life in the British Isles in the fifth century. Born in Britain as a Roman citizen and kidnapped by raiders to Ireland as a teenager, where he remained to do his holy work, Patrick's life encapsulates the themes of the era, as the new religion won out of paganism as the Roman Empire fell.

Almost as valuable as the biography itself are Bury's complex appendices, which comprise more than half the book, and include such important scholarly details as the author's notes on Patrick's own writings, the memoirs of the saint by other writers including Muirchu, an examination of other Irish source materials, and a look at the historical evidence for such events as the dates of Patrick's birth and captivity, his possible visit to Rome in 432, his consecration, the location of his burial, and much more.

About the Author
British historian John Bagnell Bury (1861-1927) was a professor of modern history at Cambridge. His writings, known for a readability combined with a scholarly depth, include History of the Later Roman Empire (1889), History of Greece (1900), and Idea of Progress (1920).
Cosimo is proud to offer Life of St. Patrick and His Place in History in hardcover and paperback formats at leading online bookstores including Barnes & Noble (paperback and hardcover) and Amazon (paperback and hardcover).

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day from all of us at Cosimo!

February Series of the Month: A Book of the Beginnings

After enjoying years as a popular journalist and poet, intellectual and freethinker Gerald Massey turned his vast studies in the field of Egyptology into A Book of the Beginnings, a bold statement that the origin of all civilization lays in ancient Egypt. His assertions, radical at the time-indeed, almost a century before the discovery of three-million-year-old human remains in Africa-resonate loudly today, when molecular biology is making corresponding discoveries alongside the still-raging creation-versus-evolution controversy. Massey lays the foundation of the Egypt-centric position through a scholarly comparative analysis of language, names, and mythology-delving not only into our most basic actions of naming and communicating, but also man's beloved, universal myths of death, awakenings, and love in this two volume set.

In Volume I, Massey lays the foundation of the Egypt-centric position through a scholarly comparative analysis of language, names, and mythology-delving not only into our most basic actions of naming and communicating, but also man's beloved, universal myths of death, awakenings, and love. In Volume II, Massey intelligently argues an Egyptian origin for Biblical symbology, lexicography, and mythology. Here, he not only asks if the oldest Jewish and Christian axioms were really born on the banks of the Nile, he offers a stalwart and profound "Yes!"

About the Author
British author Gerald Massey (1828-1907) published works of poetry, spiritualism, Shakespearean criticism, and theology, but his best-known works are in the realm of Egyptology, including The Natural Genesis and Ancient Egypt: The Light of the World

Cosimo Honors Black History Month and Activist W. E. B. Du Bois

William Edward Burghardt (W. E. B.) Du Bois was a leader of the black community in America and fought for equal rights. Du Bois was known for his great roles as a civil rights activist, Pan-Africanist, sociologist, historian, as well as author and editor. In honor of Du Bois'  work against discrimination and racism, and Black History Month, Cosimo would like to highlight some of Du Bois' greatest works.

The Suppression of the African Slave Trade to the United States of America 1638-1870
Based on the Harvard thesis of DuBois-one of the great black intellectuals of American history-and incorporating analyses of national, state, and colonial statues, Congressional documents, personal narratives, and other foundational sources, this essential work of African-American history examines the prosecution of slavery laws in the early colonies in North America and explores the moral, political, and economical ramifications of the slave trade and its opposition. This study of the slave-trade laws remains a vital resource for students of early America.

The Souls of Black Folk
As an early work in the field of sociology, this book analyzes the interactions between the races and offers a solution for the strife and inequality that had come to characterize those interactions. DuBois believed that education was the route to a better life for all blacks, and his recommendation became the basis for the civil rights movement. Anyone interested in history, race relations, sociology, or the intellectual heritage of the United States will find this an essential read.

DARKWATER: Voices from Within the Veil
DuBois was the most influential black intellectual in American history, one whose voice and thoughts continue to enlighten and educate readers today, and this is a collection of his most inspired short-form writing. Collecting essays and poems from publications such as The Atlantic and The Journal of Race Development, this 1920 volume-provocative and aggressive and unflattering to the dominant white culture-raised the ire of many mainstream critics of the day, which continues to make it all the more valuable a read today.

The Negro
This is the classic history of the African peoples in Africa and the New World, a repudiation of the absurd belief, widely held in the post-Civil War period, that Africans had no civilization but the one foisted upon them by their slavetrading captors. Writing for a popular audience in 1915, DuBois lays out in easy-to-read, nonacademic prose the striking and illustrious story of the complex history and varied cultures of Africa, from the art and industry of the peoples of the continent to the dramatic impact the slave trade had both in Africa and on her descendents in the Western Hemisphere. Boldly proud and beautifully written, this essential work will delight readers of American and African history as well as students of great American literature.

About the Author
American writer, civil rights activist, and scholar William Edward Burghardt Du Bois (1868-1963) was the first black man to receive a PhD from Harvard University. A cofounder of the NAACP, he was convinced that education was the means for African Americans to achieve equality.
