September Book of the Month: Psychic Exploration by Edgar D. Mitchell

Edgar D. Mitchell is the founder of IONS, The Institute of Noetic Sciences, a former Apollo astronaut, and a Navy Captain. Among his many degrees are four honorary doctorates and a ScD in Aeronautics and Astronautics from MIT. Edgar Mitchell, Apollo 14 Astronaut, Moonwalker, and Visionary Died

It is with sadness and deep respect, that we announce the death of Edgar Mitchell, Apollo 14 astronaut, 6th man to walk on the moon, a hero and a visionary who died last Thursday February 4.

After his Apollo 14 mission in 1971, he founded the California-based Institute of Noetic Sciences. On its website announcing Mitchell's death, it states:

"...this experience (in space) radically altered his worldview: Despite science's superb technological achievements, Mitchell realized that we had barely begun to probe the deepest mystery of the universe—the fact of consciousness itself. He became convinced that the uncharted territory of the human mind was the next frontier to explore, and that it contained possibilities we had hardly begun to imagine. Within two years of his expedition, Edgar Mitchell founded the Institute of Noetic Sciences in 1973."

Current President of IONS, Cassandra Vieten wrote this in her in memoriam of Edgar Mitchell:

"When he returned from space forty-five years ago, Apollo 14 Astronaut Dr. Edgar Mitchell committed his life to supporting a sustainable future. He worked tirelessly to understand and promote what he viewed as an absolutely necessary collective shift in consciousness. To those of us who knew him well, Edgar was an enthusiastic, loving, dedicated, courageous, generous, and brilliant man who inspired us to be bold in our exploration of the further reaches of human potential, to fearlessly challenge inadequate paradigms, and to carry his spirit of adventure into investigating our inner lives.......

.....As Mitchell gazed at Earth floating in the vastness of space and contemplated the history and hopes of humankind on that lonely blue sphere, he was engulfed by a profound sense of universal connectedness.

“I realized that the story of ourselves as told by science—our cosmology, our religion— was incomplete and likely flawed. I recognized that the Newtonian idea of separate, independent, discreet things in the universe wasn’t a fully accurate description. What was needed was a new story of who we are and what we are capable of becoming.”

July Organization of the Month: IONS

IONS was founded in 1973 by Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell, (co-author of Psychic Exploration) and offers education and outreach to help support individual and collective transformation. This nonprofit also conducts and collaborates on leading-edge research into the potentials and powers of consciousness, exploring phenomena that do not necessarily fit into conventional scientific models while maintaining a commitment to scientific rigor.

"The Grounded 2" Premiere

Featuring IONSs founder Edgar Mitchell, "The Grounded 2" (sequel to "The Grounded"), will premiere at the Contact in the Desert Conference on August 9th at the Joshua Tree Retreat Center. In both documentary films, you can see the Grounding phenomenon transform the life of people, plants, and animals who were sick or struggling with health issues. The film discusses why and how all living beings should be in natural contact with the Earth.

Mitchell's IONS Celebrates 40 Years in 2013

As Cosimo looks to holiday celebrations and preparing for the new year, we are excited to congratulate our author Edgar Mitchell on the 40th anniversary of founding the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS). Festivities officially begin on January 20, 2013, with a gala celebrating 40 years of consciousness research by the institute.

Mitchell, also an Apollo 14 astronaut, founded IONS in 1973 as an institute for researching beyond physical science. Psychic Explorations, his anthology on psychic research, was originally published the following year and offers insight into the issues explored by noetic sciences.

Edgar Mitchell Honored with Key to the City of Petaluma

Last month, Cosimo author and Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell was honored as a veteran and astronaut for dedicating his life to serve mankind.  

The award,  the key to the city of Petaluma, was given by the mayor of Petaluma on October 27, 2012, was given in recognition of Edgar Mitchell's services to his country as a Korean War veteran, Apollo 14 astronaut, the Founder of the Institute of Noetic Sciences, and his dedication to promoting peace and enlightenment for mankind.
