July Series of the Month: An Essay on the Principle of Population

In honor of the 117th anniversary of the founding of US Census Bureau, we are showcasing An Essay on the Principle of Population as our Series of the Month.

Around 1796, Mr. Malthus, an English gentleman, had finished reading a book that confidently predicted human life would continue to grow richer, more comfortable and more secure, and that nothing could stop the march of progress. He discussed this theme with his son, Thomas, and Thomas ardently disagreed with both his father and the book he had been reading, along with the entire idea of unending human progress. Mr. Malthus suggested that he write down his objections so that they could discuss them point-by-point. Not long after, Thomas returned with a rather long essay. His father was so impressed that he urged his son to have it published. And so, in 1798, appeared An Essay on Population. Though it was attacked at the time and ridiculed for many years afterward, it has remained one of the most influential works in the English language on the general checks and balances of the world's population and its necessary control. Originally two volumes, it is presented here in an omnibus edition.

About the Author

Thomas Robert Mamthus (1766-1834) was educated at Jesus College in Cambridge. In 1798, he was curate at Albury in Surrey, and became a Professor of History and Political Economy at Haileybury College, 1805.

"The Roosevelts: An Intimate History" comes to PBS

The fourteen hour documentary film, "The Roosevelts: An Intimate History," began on PBS on September 14th and will continue for seven episodes. Each episode gives viewers an intense overview of the lives of  Theodore, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt from unknown stories and facts, to deeply researched fresh takes on famous happenings and events, this film is sure to delight any history buff.

Beginning with Theodore Roosevelt’s birth in 1858, the episodes (from documentary filmmaker Ken Burns) cover both the political and private lives of the three relatives, covering elections, economic struggles, wars, family births and deaths, as well as their bravery, vision, and courage in both personal and public spheres, ending with Eleanor’s death in 1962. This documentary is the first of its kind to combine all three individual stories and histories of the three most predominant Roosevelts into one single narrative and to do so in such great detail, thoroughness, and depth.

Series of the Month: The Literary Digest History of the World War

This summer is the centennial anniversary of the start of World War I, one which had everlasting effects on the world and its people. Throughout the period of 1914-1918, soldiers and correspondents from America, Britain, France, Germany, and others delivered ample reports from the front-lines; unlike anything society or mass media had previously known. Although most of the original publications were subjected to censorship, after the cessation of hostilities the original journals were published from their sources, such as in The Literary Digest History of the World War, a replica of the 1919 edition, is a series broken into ten illustrated volumes, curated by journalist Francis W. Halsey from journals and reports by correspondents.

The books include original maps, and illustrations illuminating readers a century later on the realities of the Great War. The series begin detailing the Western Front June 1914 and ends with the final navel battles and peace treaty in May 1920.  This series will appeal to World War I buffs, historians, and students of journalism. 

About the Author

Francis W. Halsey (October 15, 1851 – November 24, 1919) was an American journalist, editor of the New York Times, and historian from Unadilla, New York. He was the compiler and editor of his major achievement, The Literary Digest History of the World War, a series which gives an astonishing perspective on the Great War. Publication began within a year after the Peace Treaty of Versailles and Halsey died while working on the final volume.
