This month Cosimo presents Psychic Exploration, A Challenge for Science, as our July Book of the Month.
Published originally in 1974, it is considered a cornerstone to psychic research, life’s purpose, and the meaning of the universe. This book was compiled by Edgar D. Mitchell, Apollo 14 astronaut and founder of the Institute of Noetic Sciences, edited by John White with a host of renowned scientists covering consciousness, parapsychology, and telepathy like Willis W. Harman, Jean Houston, Stanley Krippner, Robert Masters, William G. Roll, Russell Targ, Charles T. Tart, Montague Ullman, and more. This reprint edition contains a new introduction by Dean Radin, senior scientist with IONS, and Marilyn Schlitz, former IONS president.
The plethora of topics organized into a nearly thirty chapter anthology, continues to be as timeless as its initiator Edgar D. Mitchell.

Happy Independence Day from Cosimo
Tomorrow is the Fourth of July, the day the United States became independent from Britain. In celebration of the Declaration of Independence, our Founding Fathers, and the struggles and bravery of those who came before us, Cosimo is highlighting some great titles about the holiday. In between fireworks, cookouts, family reunions, and baseball games, relax with one of these great books.
The Works of Thomas Jefferson, Vol. II by Thomas Jefferson
The works in this volume take place during the years 1771 to 1779, which include the drafts of numerous bills, correspondence to George Washington, notes on rules for the Continental Congress, as well as many drafts of the Declaration of Independence.
The Constitution of the United States and Other Historical American Documents
Presented in this book are the three founding documents of the United States and another that altered and divided the Union for a brief moment in history: The Declaration of Independence, Articles of Confederation, United States Constitution, and Constitution of the Confederate States. Together, these four documents offer a firsthand perspective on the political history of the United States.
John Adams, Vol.1 by John Quincy Adams
One of the most complete biographies ever written about an American president, this is a remarkable effort examining the life and career of the great Revolutionary leader and the second man to take the oath of office, John Adams. This volume covers everything from Adams's school days up to his landmark term in the Congress of 1774 straight through to the advent of the Declaration of Independence.

July 2nd is World UFO Day
Tomorrow, July 2nd is World UFO day, a day dedicated to the existence of Unidentified Flying Objects. Whether you'd like to find others to compare sightings with, find new friends to watch UFO themed movies, or simply spend the evening star gazing in a group, this day has activities for you!
The first World UFO Day was celebrated in 2001. For more information about World UFO Day, news and research on UFOS, or UFO organizations and events near you, please visit World UFO Day.
If you would like to spend your World UFO Day reading about everything unidentified, unexplained, or unanswered, Cosimo has just the books for you. Cosimo offers a wide array of rare and hard-to-find UFO books with titles like Flying Saucers over the White House: The Inside Story of Captain Edward J. Ruppelt and His Official U.S. Airforce Investigation of UFOs by Colin Bennett, Left at East Gate: A First-Hand Account of the Rendlesham Forest UFO Incident, Its Cover-up, and Investigation by Larry Warren, Hair of the Alien: DNA and Other Forensic Evidence of Alien Abductions by Bill Chalker, and Body Snatchers in the Desert: The Horrible Truth at the Heart of the Roswell Story by Nick Redfern.
What do you think about UFOs? The Economist magazine just issued a tongue-in-cheek article "Everything You Need to Know About UFOs" referring to reports by the National UFO Reporting Centre, a non-profit, that has catalogued almost 90,000 reported sightings of UFOs since 1974, stating: "It turns out that aliens are considerate. They seldom disturb earthlings during working or sleeping hours. Rather, they tend to arrive in the evening, especially on Fridays, when folks are sitting on the front porch nursing their fourth beer, the better to appreciate flashing lights in the heavens (see chart). The state aliens like best is Washington—a finding that pre-dates the legalisation of pot there. Other popular destinations are also near the Canadian border, where the Northern lights are sometimes visible. UFOs tend to shun big cities, where there are lots of other lights, and daylight hours, when people might think they were just aeroplanes."
Whether you agree with this skeptical view of The Economist, or just want to honor World UFO Day, scan the night skies tonight for any unidentified flying objects, and judge for yourself.

June is International Crime Month!
International Crime Month is upon us again! In honor of all things mysterious, horrible, scary, curious, and creepy, Cosimo would like to showcase some of our fantastic crime titles from abroad.

The Middle East
The Tragedy of the Korosko by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
A group of Westerners on holiday in the Middle East are taken hostage while on a cruise down the Nile. What do their captors want? The terrorists will either kill them, or forcibly convert them to Islam. This novel from 1898 sounds earily similar to current events in the Middle East.
The United Kingdom
The Wisdom of Father Brown by G. K. Chesterton
Chesterton is best remembered, perhaps, as a spinner of mystery tales, and for his recurring character of Father Brown. This 1914 collection of stories includes some of the crime-solving priest's greatest cases.
The Mysterious Affair at Styles: Hercule Poirots First Case by Agatha Christie
The mystery begins with the death of Emily Inglethorp at Styles, a manor in the English countryside. Captain Hastings, a guest at the house, calls upon his friend Poirot to help investigate. The obvious suspect is Emily's husband, who stood to inherit a large fortune upon her death. But the timeline doesn't quite work out, and Poirot must delve further into the lives and motivations of the family living at Styles to uncover who committed the crime.

Canada
An African Millionaire: Episodes in the Life of the Illustrious Colonel Clay by Grant Allen
Though Allen published what is considered one of the first Canadian science fiction books, The British Barbarians, in 1895, he is best remembered today for his creation of Colonel Clay: the first great thief of short mystery fiction. This series of witty, ironic tales (the complete adventures of the gentleman rogue) come complete with the charming original illustrations.
World Wide
The Lock & Key Library Series edited by Julian Hawthorne
This unique 10 volume series contains a classic overview of the history of the genre. Here adventurous readers will find tales from ancient times, the first detective story of modern literature (Voltaire, Volume IV), and classic and beloved--but often hard-to-find--writings by the likes of Charles Dickens, Rudyard Kipling, Robert Louis Stevenson, and other luminaries of fiction. For more information about this series or to purchase either the paperback or the hardcover volumes, please contact us.
For a complete list, please browse all of our mystery titles here.
This month-long initiative (started by four American publishers—Grove Atlantic, Akashic Books, Melville House, and Europa Editions) features international crime fiction authors, editors, critics, and publishers who will appear together in a series of readings, panels, and discussions during June. For upcoming events and for more information about this project, visit the International Crime Month Magazine.

June Series of the Month: The Ante-Nicene Fathers
Cosimo is showcasing our handsome religious texts with our June Series of the Month, The Ante-Nicene Fathers by Reverend Alexander Roberts et al.
One of the first great events in Christian history was the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, convened to organize Christian sects and beliefs into a unified doctrine. The great Christian clergymen who wrote before this famous event are referred to as the Ante-Nicenes and the Apostolic Fathers, and Cosimo offers their writings in a ten-volume set.
The Ante-Nicenes lived so close to the time of Christ that their interpretations of the New Testament are considered more authentic than modern voices. But they are also real and flawed men, who are more like their fellow Christians than they are like the Apostles, making their words echo in the ears of spiritual seekers. This 10-volume collected works of the Ante-Nicenes were first published between 1885 and 1896.
Cosimo offers this 10 volume series by individual volume at leading online bookstores or as a full set in hardcover or paperback, especially of interest to readers of interest in religion, collectors who like to expand their personal library, or professional librarians. If you are interested in purchasing the full set, please contact us.
Readers will find the writings of:

- Bishops Antolius of Constantinople, Archelaus of Carchar, and Peter of Alexandria
- Alexander of Cappadocia, bishop of Jerusalem until he was taken prisoner by the Romans
- Theognostus, Pierius, and Thenas of Alexandria
- Phileas, a philosopher from Thmuis
- Pamphilus, patron of the library at Caesarea
- Malchion, a rhetorician from Antioch
- And many, many more

Ladders, Black Cats, Broken Mirrors, and Open Umbrellas, Oh My!
While Tuesday the 13th and Friday the 17th are unlucky in other cultures, today is Friday the 13th, a day that brings bad luck for many of those who are superstitious in the Western culture. There can be as many as three Friday the 13ths in a single calendar year or as little as one in 14 months.
According to the Stress Management Center and Phobia Institute in Asheville, North Carolina, an estimated 17 to 21 million people in the United States are affected by a fear of this day making it the most feared day and date in history. Some people are so paralyzed by fear that they avoid their normal routines in doing business, taking flights or even getting out of bed (called paraskevidekatriaphobia).
To help and assist those readers out there who may be affected by the date today, we have scoured our titles for some ways to deal with the bad luck and superstitions of Friday the 13th.
This 1901 guide to casting a horoscope and interpreting the stars introduces the reader to the Ptolemaic roots of astrology and explains everything the amateur forecaster needs to know: how to determine the exact place and time of your birth, necessary for astrological calculations, how to formulate predictions from cast horoscopes, and more.
The Encyclopedia of Magickal Ingredients: A Wiccan Guide to Spellcasting by Lexa Rosean
Lexa Rosean provides beginner and experienced practitioners of spellcasting with a quick, easy, and accurate guide to the magickal powers and properties of herbs, spices, flowers, vegetables, fruits, metals, and colors -- more than 500 ingredients in all. With this info at your fingertips, you can craft spells for specific desires or needs -- whether it's love, luck, fertility, or even next month's rent!
Fear not all ye who are superstitious, studies have shown no correlation between things like increased accidents or injuries and Friday the 13th, in fact, there seem to be less! So breathe and think soothing thoughts, today might not be so unlucky after all.

Were You Born Under a Lucky Star? by A. Alpheus

Napoleon's Lucky Dream Book: A Book of Fate by Unknown
This "Book of Fate" is said to be a perfect facsimile of the one used by Napoleon, and was supposedly consulted by him on every important occasion. It permits fortune telling by dice; fortunate and unfortunate days; behaviors; the lines and forms of the face, hair, and eyes; as well as fortune telling by cards, palms, and coffee grounds in a cup. Last but not least, it provides spells, charms, and incantations, as well as signs of a speedy marriage, and ways to choose good husbands and wives.
According to Frazer, superstition may have been responsible for some terrible misunderstandings and even worse misdeeds, but in lending strength to the core institutions of government, private property, marriage, and respect for human life, superstition has played an invaluable role in the increased civility of man.

June Classic of the Month: The Report on Unidentified Flying Objects
Cosimo is proud to present the June Classic of the Month, The Report on Unidentified Flying Objects: The Original 1956 Edition by Edward J. Ruppelt with an introduction by UFO expert and investigative writer Colin Bennett. It was in June of 1947 (67 years ago on the 24th!) that the phrase "flying saucer" gained national attention when a pilot named Kenneth Arnold reported seeing nine unidentified objects flying in formation near Mount Rainier in Washington State.
The Report on Unidentified Flying Objects was the first serious, unbiased account written about UFOs by anyone connected with the official government investigations of UFO phenomena. Ruppelt, who coined the term "unidentified flying objects" and headed Project Blue Book from 1951 to 1953, includes his personal investigations and findings in his extensive research on UFOs. He discusses both well-publicized UFO sightings and lesser-known accounts, as well as the inner workings of Air Force UFO research.
About the Author
Edward J. Ruppelt (1923-1960) served at the Air Technical Intelligence Center, where he took over Project Grudge, a formal investigation by the U.S. military with the goal of debunking extraterrestrial and UFO activity. Under Ruppelt's supervision, the project, later named Blue Book, experienced its most fruitful years, when investigations were properly conducted without judgment or disdain.
For more books by Colin Bennett or other UFO titles, please visit our UFO webpage or our UFO bookshelf.

June Book of the Month: Crash at Corona about the Roswell Incident

Cosimo is highlighting UFOs this month with the upcoming 67th year anniversary of the the Roswell Incident. To celebrate, our June Book of the Month is Crash at Corona: The U.S. Military Retrieval and Cover-Up of a UFO - The Definitive Study of the Roswell Incident by Don Berliner and Stanton T. Friedman.
The crash happened near Corona, a tiny town not far from Roswell, New Mexico, in 1947. Berliner and Friedman sifted through once-classified government documents, interviewed military and civilian witnesses, pieced together evidence, considered alternative theories, and concluded that a UFO crashed near Corona-and the U.S. government knew it and covered it up.
Praise for Crash at Corona
"One of the more credible books arguing the existence of UFOs...Most arresting of all is the testimony of those who handled the debris, who had no opportunity to compare notes, yet have described the materials ...in almost identical language." -- Publishers Weekly
About the Authors
Don Berliner has written more than 300 magazine articles and 25 books on aviation history and space and was also a staff writer for the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena (NICAP). He is board chairman of the non-profit Fund for UFO Research, Inc., and is a delegate to the UFO Research Coalition.
Stanton T. Friedman is a nuclear physicist and is also the author of Top Secret/Majic.
